Genetic Eye Certification

Companion Animal Eye Registry

Animal Vision Center recommends that owners of breeding, service, and performance dogs get certified eye screening exams by a veterinary ophthalmologist annually for their dogs. The Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER) process is managed by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and any breed of dog can be examined for the identification of inherited eye problems.

The CAER examination is not intended to monitor or diagnose known eye diseases and does not include any additional diagnostic testing.

What to Bring

On the day of your appointment, please bring the following information for each dog in order to complete the CAER form:

  • Registration number
  • Owner’s name and contact information
  • Dog’s information including registered name, date of birth, sex, breed, and — if applicable — their permanent ID# (ie; microchip or tattoo).

Following examination, you will receive a CAER form completed by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist. Completed forms are submitted to the OFA who manage the certification process. All findings remain strictly confidential and your dog will receive certification through OFA at their discretion.

If you are interested in scheduling an eye screening for your breeding or service dog, please contact us to set up an appointment.
